Demand and complexity in general practice are increasing, and practices are facing a widening gap between patient demand and the capacity available to meet population needs. All practices have pressures and workforce challenges, with these often felt most acutely in practices working in areas of high need and deprivation, and in rural areas.
New approaches for tackling these pressures are recognised in the Modern General Practice model, which aims to better align capacity with demand, improve the working environment for staff and improve patient experience. Implementation of the model is being supported by quality improvement initiatives such as the General Practice Improvement Programme (GPIP) – Practice Level Support (PLS), providing hands-on support to practices wanting to explore and implement opportunities to improve productivity, patient outcomes and staff wellbeing.
Arden & GEM is working collaboratively with Midlands and Lancashire, North of England, and South, Central and West Commissioning Support Units as one of five PLS Delivery Partners.
In a series of interviews, Dr Mayur Lakhani, GP Principal, Highgate Medical Centre, Leicestershire shares his thoughts on the PLS programme with Ian Razzell, Associate Director of Primary Care, NHS Arden & GEM CSU.
